Self-Control

The Franklin Makeover has been a fascinating experiment and exercise for me. I was especially amazed by what I discovered when I became the unopinionated observer. Seeing myself—and my habits—without judgment was eye-opening.

This week, I chose self-control, and it turned out to be the perfect attribute to focus on. Each year, my pastor calls us to participate in a fast, and just as Week 17 began, our fast started on January 18, 2026.

As many of you know, fasting requires a great deal of self-control—especially when you’re used to eating three meals a day.

Since retirement, breakfast is usually the one meal I skip. However, during this fast, something interesting happened. When I wake up in the morning, I feel the urge to eat anyway.

That’s when “Subby” likes to chime in, reminding me, “It’s morning—you need to eat.” At that point, I have to consciously exercise self-control and say no, because I have a higher calling during this time of fasting.

Several hours go by, and the urge returns. Once again, I practice self-control. My goal has been to do liquids only from sunup to sundown, and let me tell you—I had to double down on that self-control.

I made it through Monday and Tuesday successfully. On Wednesday, I came up about an hour short—but I’m still giving it my best and staying in the fight.

Alongside this, I continue to recognize kindness everywhere, every day. I see it while shopping, and especially while driving (which might be a small miracle in itself!). Becoming more aware has opened my eyes to how much goodness is happening all around us.

That’s all for now… until next time.

Peace,
Larry
