USA TODAY Features Audrey Wineglass Foster, Founder of The Caregiver Link, in Inspiring Interview on the Future of Caregiving and the Caregiver Economy

Maryland — October 2026 — In a moving and insightful conversation with Madeline Mitchell, national reporter for USA TODAY, educator-turned-advocate Audrey Wineglass Foster shared how her personal experiences as a caregiver inspired her to create The Caregiver Link — a centralized online platform designed to make caregiving less overwhelming and more humane.

A Purpose-Driven Mission Born from Experience

Before the cameras rolled for the virtual interview, Foster says she whispered a simple prayer: “God, help me walk in my purpose.”

That moment of calm set the tone for an emotional and purpose-filled conversation that resonated with caregivers across the country.

When Mitchell asked what inspired her to start The Caregiver Link, Foster spoke candidly: “Madeline, I’ve been a caregiver to four people in my lifetime — my mother-in-law, both parents who died within 30 days of each other, and now my brother, who has a learning disability,” said Foster.

“Over the years, I’ve had to navigate complex systems — legal, financial, medical — while juggling grief and responsibility. I realized that caregivers like me needed a single, trustworthy place to turn to for help.”

Streamlining the Chaos of Caregiving

In the interview, Mitchell noted the vast amount of information already online, to which Foster replied:

“It’s overwhelming what’s out there. I felt like I needed another master’s degree just to figure out what to do and when. I wanted to make the process less daunting — to advocate for a system that’s simpler, more centralized, and less intimidating.”

When Mitchell asked why that matters, Foster offered a sobering statistic: “An estimated 18 to 40 percent of caregivers die before the person they care for.

Spousal caregivers experience a 63 percent higher mortality rate due to stress and self-neglect. My own father cared for my mother, who had dementia. He passed from a stroke before she died — just 30 days apart.”

Restoring Humanity and Dignity to Care

Foster stressed that caregiving must become a national conversation — one grounded in humanity, dignity, and education. “We should be teaching this early,” she said.

“Middle- and high-school life-skills classes, college electives, workshops in churches and temples — all of these could prepare people for something every one of us will face.” Her website, The Caregiver Link, brings that philosophy to life.

It curates trusted resources, emotional-wellness tools, and practical guides to help caregivers care not only for loved ones but also for themselves.

“If we’re going to live longer, we have to maximize our healthy years,” Foster explained. “Until then, we have to link arms and connect. There’s wisdom in many counselors — and peace in shared support.”

Building a Future Beyond Caregiving

As 2026 draws to a close, Foster’s vision continues to expand. She now leads a team of 30 like-minded individuals who are each developing additional income streams beyond their 9-to-5 jobs — all while championing the importance of self-care, financial literacy, and community resilience.

“Recognizing that helping people through their caregiving journey is my true calling,” she says, “I’m committed to building the online dream I envisioned years ago — a platform where caregivers can find trusted information, meaningful community, and genuine encouragement.”

  • Oh Audrey! Cheering you on for your vision. I share your deep-felt concern experientially! I well understand the statistic you quote: ““An estimated 18 to 40 percent of caregivers die before the person they care for.” Though I was a “48-hr-day” caregiver “only” to my dad for two years and my very ill mom for fourteen years (“only” two persons unlike your four), I HAVE walked in your shoes. So I am so very very grateful for all you are working for, knowing how direly caregivers need all you talk about. Applause and blessings!

  • This is very well written! I love the insight into your “why” that is shared here. Keep up the great work!
