In this week’s Zoom session, Lori asked if we felt minimized in the shadow of others who we perceive as wonderful or amazing. This brought to mind a statement I have often said laughingly after experiencing a less-than-genius individual’s work.
“If they can do it, I KNOW I can do it!”
The digital court reporter who can’t figure out how to take notes and has more question marks than helpful information — if she can pass the exam to be a digital court reporter, I KNOW I can!
The creator who can’t spell or figure out correct punctuation — if they can successfully publish patterns and create a training course, I KNOW I can!
The stenographic court reporter whose strokes are so sloppy that I have to fill in the transcription when I’m supposed to be scoping — if she can write 240 words per minute and pass the stenographic court reporter exam, I KNOW I can!
There is a line that circulates sometimes: “You had one job!” Photographs with this caption show some hilarious situation where someone did the opposite of a SAP and the results are obvious to anyone observing.
Rather than allowing myself to feel timid, unworthy, or incapable, I choose to look at the world and the people in it, and say, “If they can do that, I KNOW I can do it!” Not only can I do it, but I will do it with a standard of excellence and perfection.

Excellent! And then you are an example to others who think “If Darnelle can do it, so can I.” Except you are doing it to a high standard:)
