MKE Week 13 Blog
Cool Runnings
This week, I took a short break and rewatched the movie Cool Runnings. I had half-heartedly watched it years ago, but viewing it now—while on the Master Key Experience (MKE) journey—was a completely different experience.
Amazing how a movie hits differently when your awareness has been upgraded.
What stood out to me was that there were multiple Hero’s Journeys unfolding at the same time.
Leon’s character had dreamed his entire life of becoming a gold-medal Olympic sprinter. He had a plan, worked the plan, and stayed disciplined—only to have his dream crushed by a tragic trip and fall caused by another runner.
Malik Youba’s character simply wanted off the island of Jamaica—to escape limitation and see more of life—yet he suffered the same devastating setback.
Then there was Junior, living a life of quiet desperation, obediently following his father’s wishes like a sheep, instead of listening to his own inner calling.
And of course, Sanka—who wasn’t chasing glory at all. He was there purely to support his friends and their dreams (and maybe have a little fun along the way).
What did I see through the MKE lens?
• If you want something, you must work hard for it.
• You must look in the mirror—honestly.
• You must look inside for the answers.
• You must rise above, not sink below.
• You must know what you want and persist.
Building a bobsled team was an improbable dream for four guys who had never seen snow or ice—no sled, no money, no support, and plenty of doubters. Sounds familiar, right?
As Og Mandino reminds us in OG Scroll III, page 64:
“The prizes of life are at the end of each journey, not near the beginning, and it is not given to me to know how many steps are necessary in order to reach my goal.” Og Mandino
Peace be the journey.
Larry Russell

Powerful takeaways,Larry! 🙌 “You must rise above, not sink below.” So true. Their improbable dream is such a perfect metaphor for our own journeys. Keep writing! 💫
One of my favourite movies, thank you for sharing Larry! Definitely a few Heroes in this movie. One of the best John Candy roles, too.
